“Simple & Easy” Drives Connected Worker Platform Adoption

We love products that transform our life. Let’s take a simple example of a banking app that gives us the convenience of depositing a check by simply taking a picture using the app. Will we not use such an app that provides convenience? I’m sure we all have a banking app and we love to use it. The industrial workplace is no different. By simplifying the working life experience of an industrial front-line worker, you start to build confidence and trust with the user. This leads to enthusiastic user adoption and is another important factor in scaling enterprise digital solutions such as Connected Worker platforms.

Confidence/user confidence is about the user's trust that this piece of technology/software won't fail in whatever I’m doing. This is built while using the application by:

  • Meeting expectations of the user,
  • Able to perform user’s tasks better, faster and successfully,
  • Having control or sense of control on what's going on in the app.

While deploying a Connected Worker platform, stakeholders should work hard to build the confidence of the front-line workers who might not be tech savvy. These users are mainly concerned about getting their jobs done right. They will use any digital technology that helps improve their working life.

This blog examines what aspects of design take help in building their confidence and trust in the application.

Connected Worker Platform Design

An outdated, poorly-designed application with unclear navigation hardly increases the users’ trust.

  • Look and feel - Professional and aesthetically pleasing interface with clear visual hierarchy makes a good first impression which user trust can build upon.
  • Consistency - Establish standards and patterns and use them throughout the application so that users can avoid learning, unlearn and relearn multiple times in application causing them frustration and killing their confidence.
  • Recognition over recall - Users should not have to remember the information from one screen to another or from previous sessions.
  • Focus on information and actions on the interface that distinguish themselves from one another.
  • Avoid Clutter – Don’t let other design elements interfere with what the user wants to achieve.

Connected Worker Platform Communication/Content

  • Clarity - It ought to be clear to users how the app can help them better accomplish tasks.
  • System - Keep users informed about what’s going and let them users know where they are in the application.
  • Typos - Simple mistakes like misspellings, repeated words, grammatical errors can undermine trust and confidence, especially
    when they occur while communicating.
  • Help and documentation - Provide instructions, usage documentation contextually whenever, and wherever, users need it.
  • Tone - Use a tone that is helpful and inspires confidence and trust.
  • User’s language - Make sure to use labels and messages familiar to the users rather than technical jargon.

Connected Worker Platform Interactions

  • Simplify - Allow users to achieve their objectives right away. Remove unnecessary barriers and steps. For tasks that require users to make multiple transactions, split them into one transaction at a time so that they can focus on a single action and complete it accurately.
  • Control - You don’t want users to feel uneasy; you want them to feel in control, which builds confidence. Clear communication, aided by appropriate navigation and action controls, gives them confidence that even if they have gone down the wrong path they can always get back to the right one easily.
  • Errors - Prevent users from making errors in the first place. Forgive genuine mistakes and slips and allow them to reverse actions. It’s important to communicate errors to users gracefully, actionably and clearly.

Performance

Application performance is another critical factor in enhancing user experience. Three key aspects of performance that need to be optimized are: app load time/onboarding time, average app response time to user actions, and effective navigation.
